Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct will host a free, easy four-mile loop tour of historic Irvington, Tarrytown and the Old Croton Aqueduct beginning and ending at Main Street School at 101 Main Street, Irvington, in the town of Greenburgh in Westchester County, NY.
The mostly level, shaded walk will take place on one of the most storied sections of the Old Croton Aqueduct.
Participants can learn about the Villa Lewaro, the estate of Madam C.J. Walker, the African-American entrepreneur who was America’s first female self-made millionaire. The tour will also walk the grounds of Lyndhurst Mansion, country home of notorious robber baron Jay Gould and location for the filming of HBO’s The Gilded Age.
The tour guide will talk about the history of the Aqueduct, the origins of the village of Irvington and Washington Irving’s connection with the village.
For those wishing a more in-depth tour of Lyndhurst, tickets for mansion tours may be purchased on their website.
Four miles total, the walk is approximately two hours on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at 11 am. By train take the Metro-North Hudson Line to Irvington. From the train station, walk up Main Street to Main Street School.
