In 1903, Lucy Scribner purchased 82 Circular Street in Saratoga Springs to establish the Young Women’s Industrial Club of Saratoga that became Skidmore College.
Over time, the campus expanded to Union Avenue and the surrounding streets.
This Sunday, September 3, at 10:30 am Debbie Studwell will lead a tour of the location of Skidmore College’s first campus for the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation.
The tour, which will meet at the southeast corner of Spring & Circular streets, will last approximately 90 minutes and require walking and standing on varied terrain. The tour is limited to 30 and tickets must be purchased in advance. Check the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation’s website to confirm if the tour has sold out. If tickets are still available the day of the tour, they can be purchased at the tour’s meeting location.
The cost per tour is $15 for SSPF members and $20 for non-members. Foundation members with stroll passes need to contact the Foundation’s office to book their tour.
The Foundation’s first Autumn Stroll of the season will be held on Sunday, September 10th at 10:30 am. Stroll leader Alexandra Morgan will explore the area behind Broadway known as “The Gut”, which was home to many working class and Jewish families who provided important contributions to the community. The upcoming Autumn Stroll Series runs Sunday, September 10th through Sunday, October 29th.
In addition to the strolls, on Saturday, October 7th at 10 am there will be a Bike Tour of the Spa State Park. Bring your bike and tour along the old roads, carriage paths, and trolley lines to explore the progressive story of National Historic Landmark Saratoga Spa State Park. This tour includes the protection of the springs, the creation of the reservation, and its development as a world-class spa, which today is a major cultural and recreational destination. Tickets are $20 for SSPF Members and $25 for non-members and space is limited to twenty.
