Since its launch in 2014, New York State Historic Newspapers has provided free access to a wide range of newspapers chosen to reflect New York’s unique history. This now includes 920 titles from all 62 counties comprising over 11.7 million pages of historical content. In these years, the content has been hosted on servers located in Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York.
The site, sponsored by the Northern New York Library Network (its founder) and the Empire State Library Network with several institutional partners, gets millions of pageviews each month. To support that user base they have contracted with Veridian to build a new website to handle their increased content and traffic.
Outside of improved search functionality, a new set of features will improve the research experience on the site. On August 16, 2023 at 10 am there will be a training webinar on using the new site.
This early access session will provide a tour of the soon to relaunch website and the new searching interface, including boolean searching and faceting. It will also explore the new ways to browse the collection. To participate, register here.
The session will be recorded and made available later as well.
NYS Historic Newspapers has a newsletter that is disseminating updates, tips and tricks for the new site. Sign up by entering your contact info and clicking the box next to NYS Historic Newspaper Newsletter to learn more in the coming months about new features and changes.
