The Friends of Cedarmere, William Cullen Bryant’s historic home on Long Island, have announced that Jesse Curran has been named 2023 Poet-in-Residence. William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) was a poet, journalist, and long-time editor of the New York Evening Post.
Curran was selected by judge Judith Baumel, a poet, translator, critic and retired founding director of the Adelphi University’s Creative Writing Program.
Jesse Curran’s interests, poetry and writing on art, ecology and literature correspond well with William Cullen Bryant’s poetry centered on the natural world and his support of American artists and the founding of art organizations, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Curran is a Lecturer in the English Department at SUNY Old Westbury and earned a PhD from Stony Brook specializing in 19th Century American Literature, Environmental Humanities, and Contemplative Studies. She has published two chapbooks of poetry (2019 and 2021) that focus on nature and art, as well as a number of essays and articles in other fields.
Curran will lead a workshop for poets on Sunday, September 10th from 2 to 5:30 pm. The workshop will take place at the historic home and gardens of Bryant, one of the United States’ earliest poets. It will include a poetry writing session, an informal reading of workshop poems, and reception. The workshop is free; space is limited to twelve. In celebration of Bryant’s Birthday on Sunday, November 5th at 2 pm, Jesse Curran & Judith Baumel will read selections of their poetry. A reception will follow in Bryant’s 1862 Mill.
Cedarmere is located at 225 Bryant Avenue, in Roslyn Harbor, in Nassau County on the North Shore of Long Island.
