There are more shipwrecks per square mile/km in the St. Lawrence River‘s Thousand Islands region than any other location in Northern and Western New York, including the Great Lakes.
The St Lawrence County Historical Association (SLCHA) will host a program on shipwrecks in the American waters of the Thousand Islands by Dennis & Kathi McCarthy on Thursday, June 8th, as part of their Brown Bag Lunch Series.
In 1970, the McCarthys became certified scuba divers. In 1974, Dennis became involved in archeology when he volunteered at the excavation of a Revolutionary War shipwreck located off Carleton Island, Cape Vincent.
The couple are co-authors of several local history books and articles about shipwrecks in the Thousand Islands and are active with several local historical museums. They are retired and live in Cape Vincent, NY.
This program will begin at noon. There is a $5 suggested donation, free for Historical Society members. The SLCHA is located at 3 E. Main Street, in Canton. For more information, visit their website.
