The Matthewis Persen House Museum & Cultural Heritage Center will open for the 2023 season on Saturday, May 27th, from 10 am to 4 pm.
The Persen House, located at 74 John St, Kingston, NY 12401, at the corner of Crown and John Streets in uptown Kingston‘s Stockade National Historic District, will be open to the public every Thursday and Friday from 9 am to 4:30 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm, through Labor Day weekend. Afterward, the Persen House will open on Saturdays only from 10 am to 2 pm until closing for the season on October 29th.
On opening day, the 1st Ulster Militia will recreate an 18th-century colonial encampment at the Persen House, complete with demonstrations of fire-starting, knitting, sewing, open fire cooking, and more. The original 1st Regiment, Ulster County Militia was composed of citizen soldiers from the area now within the boundaries of Kingston, Saugerties, and Woodstock. Members of the militia promote the education of the public on military and social life during the colonial and Revolutionary War eras through demonstrations of everyday crafts and skills and the typical life of the militiaman.
In addition to the exciting events and exhibits, visitors to the Persen House Museum can explore the history and culture of the Hudson Valley region, learn about the important role the occupants of the house played in early Kingston, and enjoy a variety of interactive exhibits and activities.
