The Rome Historical Society (RHS) has invited local veterans and retirees of the former Griffiss Air Force Base to a special viewing of RHS’ Griffiss Air Force Base photograph collection on Saturday, June 18th.
All attendees will be encouraged to share their memories and experiences with the audience during the event.
Griffiss Air Force Base operated as an active military base in Rome, NY for over 50 years. During those years the base attracted many people to Rome to work and live. The Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) of the 1990s moved military operations out of Rome and negatively affected the local economy. Today, the Griffiss Business and Technology Park, one of the most successful business parks in the country, is bringing enterprise back to the former base campus.
This program is part of a larger effort to identify, capture, document, and share stories from the Griffiss Air Force Base community and to keep the legacy alive. RHS has compiled a slideshow of historic Griffiss Air Force Base photographs from the collection. Staff will record this program to be stored in the RHS archives as a piece of Rome’s history.
This program will begin at 1 pm. Reservations are required and can be completed by contacting Miranda at (315) 336-5870. The Rome Historical Society is located at 200 Church Street, Rome. For more information, call (315) 336-5870, or visit their website.
