USS Slater has announced Destroyer Escort Day, celebrating all Destroyer Escorts and their sailors as well as honor those who were lost in action, set for Saturday, June 18th in Albany.
Over 150,000 men served in destroyer escorts during the Second World War and through the Vietnam War. Their numbers are dwindling each year, but several of these veterans will be present to remember their lost shipmates. USS Slater, a National Historic Landmark, is the last Destroyer Escort afloat in America.
All who attend the ceremony will gain free admittance to the newly opened Collections Space. This space is filled with museum artifacts donated from DE sailors and their families, providing an opportunity to see how these sailors lived aboard these ‘tin cans.’
This program will begin at 10 am. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $8 for children, and free for children under 5.
The ship is located in Downtown Albany at the intersection of Broadway and Quay Street. For more information, visit the USS Slater website, or call (518) 431-1943.
