NYC Poets Afloat at South Street Seaport Museum Sunday

May 13, 2022 by Editorial Staff Leave a Comment

Poet Matt TurnerPoets from around New York City will recite poetry aboard tall ship Wavertree at the South Street Seaport Museum on Sunday, May 15th, from 2 to 4 pm.

The poets will share poetry written during their time spent aboard vessels around New York Harbor during National Poetry Month as part of NYC Poets Afloat, a poetry micro-residency and reading series.

Nine poets are participating this year, stationed across seven different vessels, many of them historic. The flotilla includes: a tugboat, a tanker, a barge, a square-rigged sailing ship, a lightship, a lighthouse tender, and a sailboat. Shipkeepers from the Tideland Institute, Lilac Preservation Project, PortSide NewYork, Waterfront Barge Museum, South Street Seaport Museum, and the sailboat Nellie Bly have welcomed the poets aboard and provided maritime context.

The roster includes poets Bonnie Jill Emanuel, Joseph Legaspi, Bill Livingston, Spurgeon Smith, Maya Mahmud, Laura Salvatore, Kyle Studstill, and Matt Turner.
