This week on The Historians Podcast Bryan Jackson discusses his new book Why the Titanic Was Doomed (White Owl, 2022).
White Star’s HMS Titanic, the most magnificent ocean liner of her time, was destined for disaster before she left the docks at Southampton in April 1912 according to Jackson – doomed by her owner, designers and the men who sailed her.
Jackson has been interested in the sinking of the Titanic since he was a child.
A Titanic survivor named Gilbert Tucker was from Albany and is buried in Albany Rural Cemetery.
Jackson said, “He was very embarrassed by the fact that he survived the sinking when so many others had perished. And I did interview a guy who knew him and he said you were never to mention Titanic in front of (Tucker). He was very sensitive about it.”
Well known in media circles in New York’s Capital District, Jackson has worked in radio and television news and radio comedy. He started two radio stations, was a public relations spokesman for two colleges and did public relations for New York state officials including former Governor Mario Cuomo.
