Preservation Long Island will host the first public screening of theater artist Malik Work’s interpretation of Jupiter Hammon’s An Essay on Slavery, on Wednesday, February 9th.
Jupiter Hammon (1711– ca.1806), was among the first published African American authors whose work was published during their lifetime. He was enslaved by the Joseph Lloyd family in Lloyd Neck, Long Island.
The virtual screening will be followed by a discussion with Malik Work and his collaborators on the film, Aanika M. Allen and William Ellis. The program will be moderated by Douglas A. Jones Jr., Associate Professor of English and Theater Studies at Duke University.
This program will take place from 5:30 to 7 pm, and will held via Zoom. Admission is free with an optional donation. Registration is required and can be completed online.
