A march to raise awareness of threats to women’s rights is planned for Glens Falls, Warren County, NY on Saturday, October 2nd. Organizers of the march, along with Planned Parenthood and other advocacy groups, have called on people to march nationwide in the face of quickly diminishing rights for women in many parts of the country and the world.
New York State has always been a leader in women’s rights and more specifically, reproductive rights – abortion was legal in NYS two years before Roe vs. Wade.
Organizers say they want the Women’s Health Protection Act passed at the national level to combat attacks on women’s rights in Texas, where a bill was recently filed that would make abortion a capital offense. They are also calling for affordable daycare, paid leave, a living wage, universal healthcare, vaccination, mask and testing mandates, action on climate change and the preservation of women’s constitutionally guaranteed reproductive rights to bodily autonomy.
“We also are marching to let women in unfortunate states know that New York is open for reproductive healthcare,” the march announcement said. “As Governor Hochul put it, ‘Our harbor is open for people to come here and understand that we will be here to take care of them and protect them. We want to make sure New York State patients, first of all, and anyone who comes here, knows their rights.’
The march will begin at Glens Falls City Park, 251 Glen Street, on Saturday, October 2nd, at noon. Marchers will march on sidewalks in a loop around downtown – Maple to Ridge to Glen to Bay to Maple – for one hour. Organizers are encouraging marchers to secure pledges for each lap accomplished, and donate the pledges realized to Planned Parenthood or any group that promotes women’s reproductive rights.
