The Albany County Historical Association will host an online presentation by Martha Lyon, ASLA, on the newly-completed Cultural Landscape Report for the historic Ten Broeck Mansion gardens and landscape on Thursday, September 23rd.
This historically-based landscape report was created by a year-long process of research into the history of the Ten Broeck landscape, research into historic plantings, and based on surveys, studies, and community feedback collected throughout the year. Topics include the landscape history of the site, an overview of invasive plant issues, and recommendations for accessibility, community use, and enhanced programming. A question and answer period will be held at the close of the presentation.
Martha H. Lyon, ASLA, holds a master’s degree in landscape architecture and is registered to practice landscape architecture in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine and New York. She has published articles and delivered lectures on historic landscapes, and has been an adjunct professor of landscape architecture at the University of Massachusetts. She has done planning and research work for the Emily Dickinson Museum (Amherst, Massachusetts), Provincetown Public Library (Provincetown, Massachusetts), and received numerous awards, including an Excellence in Historic Preservation Award from the the Preservation League of New York State in 2016 and a Preservation Award from the Massachusetts Historical Commission in 2012.
Cultural Landscape Reports were developed by the Secretary of the Interior and National Park Service as the principle treatment document for cultural landscapes and serve as the primary tool for their long-term management. The report reflects management and treatment decisions based on the character of the land, historical significance, and anticipated challenges to preservation.
