The new book The Livingston Lion: Henry Beekman Livingston’s Revolution (Epigraph, 2021) by historian Geoff Benton is the first biography of Revolutionary War soldier Henry Beekman Livingston.
The book follows Livingston from the early days of the war, recruiting his first company on the lawn of what’s now the Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck, NY, to some of the most pivotal moments of the war including the Battles of Saratoga, at Valley Forge, and the Battle of Monmouth. The book also follows Livingston into camps between battles where his temper and personality frequently brought him into conflict with his fellow officers and in trouble with senior officers.
The author Geoff Benton is a graduate of SUNY Potsdam and holds a Master’s Degree in History from SUNY Albany. He lives in Kinderhook with his family. His previous works include The Fight for Tom Cod: Newfoundland in the American Revolution and The Kinderhook Reformed Church: 300 Years of Faith and Community. He currently works at Clermont State Historic Site as the Curator of Collection and Education. More information can be found on his website.
