World Photography Day is August 19th, but any day is a great time to take photos of wildlife. Watching or photographing wildlife is a great way to connect with nature and spend time outdoors. You can even find things to photograph in your own backyard or local park.
Here are some wildlife photography tips:
- Use a long-range lens or zoom settings to avoid getting too close to wildlife; use a tripod or other secure surface to increase stability for long distance photos.
- Stay on existing roads, trails, or pathways to avoid trampling vegetation; avoid disturbing wildlife; it’s illegal to harass wildlife.
- Keep quiet, move slowly, and be patient. Let animals come toward you.
- Visit wildlife watching sites like refuges, state and local parks and green spaces, or other publicly accessible natural areas like canal-ways and rail-trails
- Understanding how light, shutter speed and shutter opening affects your photographs make it more fun.
