Salmon River Fish Hatchery Improvements

August 30, 2021 by Editorial Staff 1 Comment

Salmon River Hatchery construction courtesy DECThe Salmon River Fish Hatchery’s new fish ladder is almost ready.

Chinook and Coho Salmon stocked in Lake Ontario tributaries return to spawn. This can make for some exciting fish watching as salmon move upstream and jump or otherwise navigate various obstructions, such as the fish ladder, on their way to their desired spawning sites.

Construction crews have worked since last summer to modify the main hatchery drainage plumbing and remove the old fish ladder that was in need of replacement.

The new ladder is now in place and expected to be fully operational in time for the upcoming fall salmon spawning runs.

More information can be found on DEC’s website.
