With more than two hundred miles of shore land, the Long Island has many diverse beaches. For centuries, the island’s beaches have provided sustenance, relaxation, and inspiration. Long Island’s history is intertwined with its beaches including its sandy Atlantic Ocean surf beaches, calm bayfront beaches, and rugged North Shore Long Island Sound beaches.
The Nassau County Historical Society has announced “Isle of Shells: An Illustrated History of Long Island Beaches,” a virtual presentation focusing on the history of Long Island beaches, set for Sunday, June 6th.
The program will begin at 2 pm, and includes a curated selection of manuscripts, postcards, photographs, and maps that illustrate the history and diversity of the shores of Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
The speaker, Kristen J. Nyitray, is the author of the book Long Island Beaches (Arcadia, 2019) and an Associate Librarian at Stony Brook University where she is Director of Special Collections and University Archives.
