Charles J. LaRocca’s new novel The Red Badge to Gettysburg: An Episode of the American Civil War (2021) is a sequel to Stephen Crane’s classic novel, The Red Badge of Courage, based on the actions of the 124th NYSV, the famed “Orange Blossoms” from Orange County, New York.
Based on letters written home by soldiers in the 124th NYSV, the book begins with Private Henry Fleming the 304th New York Infantry marching away from the battlefield at Chancellorsville and back to their winter camp at Falmouth, Virginia.
The 124th NYSV must prepare for their summer campaign and the battles they all know are coming, all during the third year of the Civil War, during the times of the Military Draft Act.
LaRocca is the author of The 124th New York State Volunteers in the Civil War: A History and Roster and The Red Badge of Courage; An Historically Annotated Edition.
