The virtual conference Foundations of Independence: Protest and Communication in Revolutionary America, 1770 to 2020, hosted by Iona College and the Institute for Thomas Paine Studies (ITPS), has been set for September 24-26, 2020.
One of Thomas Paine’s most vocal critics, John Adams, remarked that the “foundation of American Independence” was laid in the chaotic, violent episodes of 1770. Marked by extensive media and strategic rhetoric surrounding events like the Boston Massacre, the transformation of protest movements to independence movements to full scale revolution was deeply connected with communication, from texts and images to oral and printed networks.
An opening event is set for Thursday, September 24th from 7 to 8:30 pm, with the Thomas Paine Cottage Museum. The event will feature an Author Talk with Dr. Benjamin Park, Sam Houston State University, on his new book Kingdom of Nauvoo: The Rise and Fall of a Religious Empire on the American Frontier. This event will be held via Zoom. Click here to register.
The Conference will feature panel discussions, Zoom Roundtable talks, musical performances, and virtual workshops that will look at the United State’s history of protests.
