The 3rd Annual Albany Book Festival, presented by the NYS Writers Institute at the University at Albany, is kicking off today, and will run through September 24th with all events online, free, and available on the Writers Institute’s YouTube Channel.
The event’s first presentation, a conversation with New York Times bestselling author of the novels Commencement, Maine, The Engagements, and Saints For All Occasions, J. Courtney Sullivan is now online. Sullivan’s fifth novel, Friends and Strangers, was published in June 2020.
“We have pivoted to a Virtual Writers Institute for our entire fall programming, with everything offered online on the NYS Writers Institute’s YouTube channel and at albanybookfestival.com,” said Writers Institute Director Paul Grondahl. “The health and safety of everyone involved is paramount and Covid-19 protocols dictate that it is not advisable or permitted to come together in large gatherings on the UAlbany campus as in previous years.”
Additional Albany Book Festival featured authors include National Book Award winner Colum McCann; National Book Award finalists Edwidge Danticat and Kali Fajardo-Anstine; former child soldier Ishmael Beah; presidential scholar Harold Holzer, author of the recently published book, The Presidents vs. the Press: The Endless Batter Between The White House and the Media — From the Founding Fathers to Fake News; Noam Chomsky, one of the most cited scholars in modern history and co-author with Robert Pollin of the new book Climate Crisis and the Global Green New Deal; Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking; and more.
One of the great features of the Albany Book Festival is the opportunity to participate in free writing workshops. This year’s workshops include:
- Hope on the Page: A Climate Writing Workshop with author Reif Larsen;
- So You’re Young and Want to Write with WAMC Northeast Public Radio reporter Jackie Orchard and author and UAlbany professor Elaine Salisbury;
- Memoirama: Everything You Need To Know To Write Memoir with Marion Roach Smith;
- Ask Tom Anything About Book Writing, Publishing, or Marketing with author and publisher Tom Swyers; and
- The How-To’s and Business End of Publishing During a Pandemic with author and UAlbany Professor Mary Valentis
All events will be held online. More information at albanybookfestival.com. The festival website will also feature a space for local authors, non-profits, and publishers to share information about their books.
The NYS Writers Institute continues to support independent local bookstores, and the Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza is the sole bookseller for the Albany Book Festival. All featured books can be ordered directly online through this Albany indie bookstore at http://www.bhny.com.
