On May 16, 2020, at approximately 4:58 pm, State Police responded to a report of an UTV crash at 659 Fuller Road in the town of Peru, Clinton County.
Police said an investigation at the scene revealed that a 2019 Mahindra Retriever UTV operated by a 13 year-old of Peru was traveling south on a dirt trail in the backyard of 659 Fuller Road.
Police said the UTV entered a field adjacent to the yard and attempted to make a left hand turn to travel east. The operator was unable to negotiate the curve, and the UTV overturned, coming to rest on its passenger side. A passenger, Emily E. Hayden, 17, of Brunswick, NY, was partially ejected and pinned under the UTV.
She succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by Clinton County Coroner Chad Deans. Coons and a third passenger, a 12-year-old, also of Peru, were both transported to the University of Vermont Health Network at the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH) in Plattsburgh for evaluations.
Police said none of the occupants had been wearing helmets or seat belts.
