New Warren, Wash Co Suffragists Exhibit Open

March 1, 2020 by Editorial Staff Leave a Comment

Warren County Historical SocietyThe Warren County Historical Society (WCHS) has announced a new exhibit, “Warren and Washington County Suffragists: 1883-1920,” set to run through May 26, 2020.

This exhibition combines a 2017 exhibit of Washington County suffragists from the Old Fort House Museum in Fort Edward, suffrage history vignettes by educator Cindy Whitman, and new research on Warren County suffragists by historian Tisha Dolton.

The display focuses on the women and men of the region who worked tirelessly for the right to vote for women at the turn of the twentieth century. Narrative panels, photographs, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia depict the local fight for “votes for women” that culminated in the passage of voting rights for women in New York in 1917 and the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920.

Two historical dioramas created by Whitman portray a suffrage rally in Washington D.C. and a suffrage conference held in Glens Falls at Ordway Hall in 1900. Miniature figurines depicting Anna Howard Shaw, Carrie Chapman Catt, Harriot Stanton Blatch, Alice Paul, and Glens Falls suffrage supporters Addison B. Colvin and Mary Hillard Loines are presented in historical scenes.

An opening reception has been set for March 18 at 6 pm at the WCHS, which will be followed by a 7 pm presentation by historian Tisha Dolton and educator Cindy Whitman showcasing the exhibit. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Tisha Dolton, originally from Greenwich, is librarian/historian at The Folklife Center at Crandall Public Library in Glens Falls, a noted women’s suffrage historian and singer, Trustee of the WCHS, former public historian for the town of Greenwich, and co-founder of the Celebrating Suffrage in Greater Glens Falls committee.

Cindy Whitman taught Social Studies at Hudson Falls for 21 years and was a regional supervisor of student teachers for SUNY Plattsburgh for 10 years. She served as director of Christ Church Methodist Theater Guild for over 20 years and writes historical and biblical music and plays.

The Warren County Historical Society is located at 50 Gurney Lane, Queensbury. They are open to the public Tuesdays and Thursdays 9 am to 4 pm, Fridays 10 am to 4 pm, and Saturdays 11 am to 2 pm. More information is available on their website.
