In recognition of Black History Month, the St. Lawrence County Historical Association (SLCHA) is set to host a presentation by De Kalb Historian Bryan Thompson entitled “The Fry Family: Black Pioneers of Gouverneur” on Thursday, February 27th.
Thompson will talk about the early black pioneers of Gouverneur such as Flora Fry, who was given a land grant by Gerritt Smith and her family.
American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week to commemorate and celebrate the contributions to our nation made by people of African descent. In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, the week was expanded to a month. Since then, U.S. presidents have proclaimed February as National African-American History Month.
This event will begin at noon. The SLCHA is located at 3 E. Main St., Canton, NY.
More information about this event or the SLCHA can be found on their website, by calling (315) 386-8133, or by e-mail info@slcha.org.
