New Westchester County History Published

February 5, 2020 by Editorial Staff 2 Comments

westchester county a historyField Horne’s new book Westchester County: A History (Westchester County Historical Society, 2018) includes over 225 illustrations and is the first comprehensive history of the county to be published in 40 years.

The book traces the history of Westchester County from its early native peoples to today.

Making extensive use of archival photographs, the author weaves the story of Westchester’s growth and development over 200 plus years. Farming, manufacturing, development of villages and suburbs, the contributions of African Americans and the waves of immigrants are all chronicled.

Field Horne, a resident of Saratoga Springs, grew up in Mount Pleasant and was the eleventh generation of his family in Westchester County. He has written a dozen books on American history and culture including histories of Greene County and Saratoga Springs.

Westchester County: A History can be purchased for $40 at independent bookstores in Westchester and on line at the Westchester County Historical Society.

I’d love to know how many pages long it is!
A short travelogue type book sounds like it would be gorgeous with all the illustrations, but it would be a completely different animal (and perhaps much more valuable to many) if it were 500 pages with copious footnotes.

411 pages, index, bibliography, a few notes. Loaded with photos of material culture. It’s well worth the purchase.
