Someone Lived Here is a non-fiction podcast that tells the stories of New York’s most interesting people, by touring through their homes. Host Kendra Gaylord walks listeners through homes, lighthouses, and mansions while telling of the complicated lives of the women and men who lived there.
In the first episode, which aired on June 3rd, Gaylord brings you to the Staten Island house of Alice Austen, a photographer who took remarkable personal photos of her friends, including at card games and cross-dressing. She was also in a loving relationship with another woman, Gertrude Tate, for 50 years. Alice Austen lived from 1866 to 1952. While walking through the home you learn Austen’s story, the events that led to her poverty, and about the acknowledgment of her work before her death.
You can listen to that podcast here. If you are interested in visiting the Alice Austen House they are open Tuesday through Sunday. Go to the Alice Austen website for more details.
New episodes Kendra Gaylord’s Someone Lived Here are planned for every other Monday throughout the summer. Homes being featured include the Lewis Latimer House, Sailors Snug Harbor, Lyndhurst Mansion and more.
