The next North Country Civil War Round Table has been set for Sunday, April 28th, at 2 pm, at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association. Jim Dawson will speak on female spies of the war, focusing on Elizabeth Van Lew of Richmond. Visitors who own items with Civil War provenance are encouraged to bring them to the event for a “show and tell” session before the talk.
Little is typically said about women’s participation in the Civil War, beyond generalities related to running the home front and perhaps nursing. One category of action that deserves more attention is that of women who passed information through enemy lines: spies.
Jim Dawson taught senior English at St. Lawrence Central School in Brasher Falls, and held the position of Brasher Town Supervisor for 42 years.
The North Country Civil War Round Table is a program of the St. Lawrence County Historical Association, a membership organization open to anyone interested in St. Lawrence County history. The St. Lawrence County Historical Association is located at 3 E. Main St., Canton. Parking is available behind the SLCHA, next to the museum’s main entrance.
