The Finger Lakes Museum (FLM) was one of ten applicants awarded a Trees for Tribs Grant through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The FLM’s project includes the planting of over 3,000 native trees and shrubs to improve wildlife habitat, water quality and climate resiliency along Sugar Creek. These riparian trees and shrubs will be planted on the banks of the Museum property and nearby landowners and grant partners, the Izaak Walton League, and the Branchport Fire Department.
This May and June, the FLM will work with community volunteers and local groups to begin planting along these properties. Planting days are scheduled for May 11, 18, 25, 31 and June 1 and will go from 9:30 am to noon. Work has begun at the Museum’s wetland property also known as the Townsend-Grady Wildlife Preserve. First steps have occurred with staking out the pier placement of a timber frame pavilion and 250-feet of elevated boardwalk. Piers will be installed over the next few weeks with applying the decking, installing the railings, and annual trail maintenance happening through the month of May. Interpretative signage will be placed throughout the wetland over the summer and fall months.
The Yates County Legislature announced last week that they will reimburse $14,000 of expenses relating to the wetland work described above. This is through the county’s natural and recreational resource department with the goal of improving public outdoor recreational areas within Yates County.
