Erie Canalway Heritage Corridor Commissioners Appointed

erie canalway national heritage corridorThe Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor has announced Secretary of the Interior David L. Bernhardt’s appointments of seven individuals to serve three year terms on the Commission of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

Members Appointed to terms through 2022 include:

Clinton Brown, Buffalo, nominated by Congressman Brian Higgins (serving since 2006)
James Farr, Rochester, nominated by Congressman Joseph Morelle (serving since 2012)
Harry Sicherman, Lockport, nominated by Congressman Chris Collins (serving since 2015)
Pieter Smeenk, Fairport, At Large (serving since 2002; founding member)
Mary Liz Stewart, Albany, nominated by Congressman Paul Tonko (serving since 2015)
Gay Vietzke, National Park Service, Secretary of the Interior’s designee (appointed 2019)
Peter Wiles, Skaneateles, At Large (serving since 2006)

The Commission’s quarterly meeting took place on Wednesday, April 24 from at the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel in Watkins Glen.

The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor was established by Congress in 2000.

The Commission is charged with ensuring a national interest in the preservation, promotion and appropriate development of the Corridor’s important historic, cultural, recreational, educational, scenic and natural resources. A Preservation and Management Plan, approved by the Secretary of the Interior and the Governor of the State of New York in 2006, sets clear goals and details clear strategies for implementation.
