Forts and Fights: Revolutionary War in the Mohawk Valley

fort plain illustrationA one-day Revolutionary War tour led by by Bruce Venter and local historians has been set for Friday, September 21, 2018, from 8 am to 4 pm.

“Forts and Fights: The Revolutionary War in the Mohawk Valley” will leave from Johnstown, and explore sites in the Mohawk Valley during the Revolutionary War; sites that are less frequently visited or on private property.

The tour will stop at Fort Johnson for an overview of Sir John Johnson’s exploits as an important Loyalist leader in the Mohawk Valley; Guy Park, home of Col. Guy Johnson, superintendent of Indian affairs during the Revolution and hear about the efforts to reopen it as a historic site; the Fort Plain Museum to understand how the Patriots used forts and fortified homes to defend the valley. After lunch, attendees will walk the Stone Arabia battlefield where Col. John Brown gave his life during Johnson’s Burning of the Valleys campaign in 1780, and then follow Johnson’s retreat to Klock’s Field where the British forces were forced across the Mohawk and eventually back to Canada. The tour will return to the departure location by 4 pm to allow you to participate in Fort Ticonderoga’s Friday evening program.

Tour Leader Dr. Bruce M. Venter, president of America’s History, LLC is an experienced tour leader of the Revolutionary War period. He is the author of The Battle of Hubbardton: The Rear Guard Action that Saved America.

This tour will start from the parking lot of the Microtel Inn and Suites, 136 N. Comrie Ave., Johnstown.

Motor coach transportation, lunch, snack and beverage breaks, all admissions and gratuities, a map and materials package are included with registration. There are arranged with the headquarters hotel for a group rate of $87.20 per night plus tax (double or single occupancy) which includes a buffet breakfast. Call the Microtel Inn and Suites, 136 N. Comrie Ave., Johnstown, NY at (518) 762-5425 to reserve a room, if necessary, and ask for the America’s History group rate.
