Culper Spy Day Set For September 15th

September 5, 2018 by Editorial Staff 1 Comment

Big Bill the Tory at Sherwood Jayne House The 4th Annual Culper Spy Day, celebrating the members of the Long Island patriot spy ring that helped change the course of the American Revolutionary War, has been set for September 15th, at Sherwood-Jayne Farm, 55 Old Post Road, in Setauket on Long Island.

While most Culper Spy Day events highlight the exploits of George Washington’s patriot spies, the Sherwood-Jayne House will give visitors a Loyalist’s view of this time period in Long Island’s history. Local Long Island Tory, William Jayne II, also known as “Big Bill the Tory”, will hold court at the Jayne family home at 55 Old Post Road.

A William Jayne II reenactor will explain the noble intentions and virtuosities of King George III. Culper Spy Day ticket holders are welcome to drop by Sherwood-Jayne Farm on September 15th between 9 am and 4 pm, for cider and donuts while Big Bill tells visitors the TRUTH about George Washington’s pesky band of renegade spies.

In addition, artifacts from Preservation Long Island’s collection with a connection to members of Long Island’s famous Culper Spy Ring and other Revolutionary War heroes will be on exhibit at the Sherwood-Jayne House. Among these is a relic from the birthplace of Colonel Benjamin Tallmadge, a founding member of the spy ring, who would become George Washington’s chief intelligence officer.

Culper Spy Day 2018 tickets also grants access to Preservation Long Island’s other historic properties the entire weekend. These include: the Custom House in Sag Harbor, NY; Joseph Lloyd Manor in Lloyd Harbor, NY and the Old Methodist Church and Exhibition Gallery in Cold Spring Harbor, NY

Ticket purchasers will receive a bracelet and a copy of the Culper Spy Day 2018 Map with event and participating venue listings. Tickets are valid for admission to most participating organizations for Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16, 2018. Additional fees apply for meals and refreshments. Tickets will be available for purchase and for pick-up in person on the day of the event at the Three Village Historical Society, 93. N Country Rd. Setauket, and online.
