Fire Dept History Focus of Schoharie Co Historians Spring Meeting

April 26, 2018 by Editorial Staff Leave a Comment

The Annual Spring Membership Meeting of the Schoharie County Historical Society will be held on Monday, April 30 at the Schoharie Fire Department, located at 114 Fort Road in Schoharie, NY.

The evening will begin with refreshments at 6:30 p.m., followed by the 7 p.m. membership meeting, a program on the history of the Schoharie Fire Department and tours of the new fire house. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

The Old Stone Fort Museum Complex will open for 2018 on Saturday, May 5, kicking off a full season of new and returning events, lectures, workshops and more. The Spring Meeting is an excellent way to learn about the benefits of membership and the many other ways to become involved.

Schoharie County Historical Society Director Carle Kopecky will present an overview of the mission and activities of the society and Educational Outreach Director Melinda McTaggart will share how she has been working to connect those efforts with new audiences throughout the county and beyond.

Following the meeting portion of the evening, Schoharie Fire Department President Martin Shrederis will present a program on the history of the department and participants will be able to take a tour of the recently completed fire house. A highlight of the tour promises to be a look at the original 1866 Niagara No. 6 Fire Engine moved last year from storage at the museum to be exhibited at the department.

The Schoharie County Historical Society operates the Old Stone Fort Museum Complex in Schoharie, publishes the semi-annual “Historical Review” of county history, and organizes lectures and historical events such as Stone Fort Days, the History Fair and the new Summer Lawn Party.

The Museum Complex is open seven days a week from May through October. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12 noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

More information about events, the society, membership and volunteer opportunities, can be found at www.TheOldStoneFort.org on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/oldstonefort or by calling (518) 295-7192.
