100th Anniv of Women Winning Right to Vote Event

Nellie Childs Smith (1885 – 1972) of Eureka with her sisters, 1911.On Sunday, November 5 at 2 pm, The Right to Vote: 100th Anniversary Commemoration will be held at the Time and the Valleys Museum in Grahamsville, Sullivan County.

The program starts with Charles Ford of Newburgh giving a talk on: “The Making of the Nineteenth Amendment”, including early movements from 1800-1834, suffrage movements around the world and suffrage champions including Harriet Beecher Stowe, Elizabeth Stanton, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglas, Sojourner Truth and Alice Paul.

This will be followed by the Archivists from the Time and the Valleys Museum giving a presentation on early 20th century women of prominence in Sullivan County, including Nellie Childs Smith, the first female lawyer in Sullivan County, Phebe Low, who in the late 1800s was one of the earliest practicing female doctor in Liberty, and Elisabeth Worth Muller, founder and president of the Monticello Suffrage Club, and more. The program is free for Museum Members and $3 for non members, and includes refreshments and Museum admission.

About the Time and the Valleys Museum: Connecting Water, people and the Catskills, the Time and the Valleys Museum is open Memorial Day to Labor Day, Thursday through Sunday, noon to 4 pm, and October through April during programs and by appointment.

The Museum is located at 332 Main Street (St. Rt. 55) in Grahamsville Sullivan County. Adults admission is a suggested donation of $5, Children under 16 $2, and children under six are free. Town of Neversink and Town of Denning residents receive free admission every Thursday. As a Blue Star Museum, the Museum offers free admission to active duty military members and up to five family members.
