Schenectady’s Stockade Walkabout September 23rd

September 14, 2017 by Editorial Staff Leave a Comment

Schenectady Stockade WalkaboutThe Schenectady County Historical Society will host a Stockade Walkabout on Saturday, September 23, from 11 am to 5 pm.

The walk will begin at the Schenectady County Historical Society, 32 Washington Ave, Schenectady, and will focus on transformation, and the many changes the neighborhood has witnessed since the 1600s.

Schenectady’s Stockade is the oldest registered historic district in New York State. The Stockade Walkabout grants visitors the chance to step inside privately-owned homes in the neighborhood.

Highlights of the Walkabout include:

The stately Greek Revival at 108 Union St (built 1831), which served as the county courthouse and jail, a school, as the Board of Education, and as an insurance company. It has recently been converted into luxury apartments. During renovations, contractors discovered historic treasures of tin ceilings, brick and stone walls which were recovered and incorporated into a new modern urban living design.

Stockade homes that fell victim to flood damage in 2011, were abandoned, and have now been restored using flood mitigation strategies and materials.

The Brouwer House, the second oldest home in Schenectady, which has recently changed from private ownership to the Schenectady County Historical Society.

The First Reformed Church’s Heritage Room and Mohawk House, open to share its 350 year history including an 1862 time capsule, art, and artifacts.

The Stockade Walkabout also features exhibits and blacksmithing demonstrations at the Schenectady County Historical Society.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the Walkabout. Students are $10. To purchase tickets, click here.
