Christ Church Episcopal will hold a book sale at the church, 431 Union Street, Hudson, on Saturday, September 30, starting at 9 am. An opening reception and early buying will be held Friday, September 29, at 5 pm.
Books for sale will include recent and out-of-print coffee table and large format books in art, photography, music, dance, architecture, antiques, gardening, cooking, and travel, as well as religion, children’s, recent fiction, and history including local New York and New England history.
Nearly one hundred books on art, antiques, gardening, history and architecture from the estate of Marvin D. Schwartz, curator and author will be available. Schwartz, who died in 2011, originated the weekly “Antiques” column at The New York Times and wrote The New York Times Book of Antiques and other books on decorative arts. He was Curator of Decorative Arts at the Brooklyn Museum and later worked as a consultant and lecturer for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His writings helped popularize antiques collecting for a general audience.
The Friday evening reception will also honor the late Julia Philip and recognize two of her children, John and Leila Philip, who with their siblings maintain and preserve the Philip Orchards and farm near Hudson. Available for purchase will be signed copies of Leila Philip’s books, A Family Place: A Hudson Valley Farm, Three Centuries, Five Wars, One Family, (Viking, 2001), and Water Rising (New Rivers Press, 2015).
Two framed black and white block prints by New Jersey artist, Dr. A. Ross Pittman, Quaker Bridge and Knox’s Bridge, Valley Forge, will be available for bidding at the Friday night reception.
The opening reception will be held Friday, September 29, in the adjoining rectory at 5 pm, and refreshments will be served. At 6 pm, for a $10 admission fee, attendees will be able to make early purchases at regular prices. Reservation are advised but not required for the reception, phone the church office at (518) 828-1329.
The Saturday sale is open to the general public with no admission charge and regular prices starting at 9 am. At 1 pm all books except specials will be sold at half-price. The sale will end by 2 pm.
The historic 1859 church building will be open for viewing each day. The church’s stained glass, dating from 1858 to the 1970’s, will be featured. A guidebook explaining the stained glass windows and memorials is available at the back of the church.
The “New to You” Shop will be open each day. Purchases benefit camp scholarships and community outreach activities.
The book sale is sponsored by Christ Church Episcopal and the Friends of Historic Christ Church Conservancy, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation established in 1997. Proceeds will benefit Christ Church stained glass restoration.
The church hall and rectory are handicapped accessible, with reserved handicapped parking in the circle off Union Street.
