The Columbia County Historical Society and Historic Hudson will host The Hudson River School (1825-1875), a Slide Show and Conversation with Peter Jung on Sunday, June 25, 2017. An opening reception will begin at 4:30 pm, the lecture will begin at 5 pm.
The mid-19th century landscape painters of the Hudson River Valley depicted the new American landscape in terms where humans and nature were united in peaceful co-existence. These realist paintings were quite detailed, and often combined many images from diverse natural scenes and vistas observed along the Hudson River as well as the extended geography including the Catskills and Adirondacks.
Hudson River School painters such as Thomas Cole, Sanford Robinson Gifford and Frederick Church, and others, captured some of the last moments of the virgin landscape inhabited by Native Americans before the European immigrants transformed borders of true wilderness into farms and settlements. These artists believed that God was manifest in the form of the American landscape, and their reverence for the vistas before them are recorded in the paintings known as Hudson River School paintings.
For the past 25 years Peter Jung has owned a gallery at 512 Warren St. in Hudson, featuring traditional American paintings. During that time he has handled many examples of the Hudson River school of art. Jung has served on the Board of Directors at the Olana Partnership, the Hudson Opera House, the Hudson Planning Commission, and the Friends of Hudson. In recent years he has restored the family gravesite of the great artist Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823-1880), who is at rest in the Hudson City Cemetery. The slide show will feature 60 images, and will be followed by a question-and-answer conversation.
The lecture will take place at Stair Galleries, 549 Warren Street, Hudson.
