This Saturday, March 28, 2015, Schuyler Mansion will host “Fabric For Furniture: Historic Choices,” presented by Elizabeth Lahikainen as first of the site’s 2015 spring lecture series focusing on 18th-century interior decoration, Schuyler Splendor: The Making of an 18th Century Home of Good Taste.
Elizabeth Lahikainen, an internationally recognized textile conservator specializing in historic upholstery, will discuss 18th century design trends, fabrics appropriate for different chair styles, and what is available in today’s market. Utilizing fabrics of unusual weave and motifs, she will demonstrate combinations using chairs from Schuyler Mansion’s collection.
The program will begin at 1pm and will also include a visit to the textile collection at Historic Cherry Hill’s Edward Frisbee Center for Collections & Research, to examine bed hangings and upholstery used by the Philip Van Rensselaer family.
As places are limited, call for details and to make reservations to Historic Cherry Hill (Group A will visit HCH prior to the lecture, and Group B will visit post lecture). An admission fee of $5.00 will be charged / $3.00 for Friends Members. Light refreshments will be offered.
Other lectures in the series will include presentations by leading experts, centered upon other areas of 18th century interior decoration, including furniture, papier mâché ceilings, wallpaper, and carpeting. Schuyler Mansion, located at 32 Catherine Street in Albany’s historic South End, was the eighteenth-century home of Revolutionary War Major- General Philip Schuyler (1733-1804) and his family.
