New Exhibit Considers Rensselaer County Landscape

February 25, 2015 by Editorial Staff Leave a Comment

image006(1)The Rensselaer County Historical Society (RCHS) in Troy debuts a new exhibit, Scenic Overlook: Perspectives on Rensselaer County’s Changing Landscape, on Friday, February 27th as part of Troy Night Out, from 5 pm to 8 pm.

The exhibit runs through December 19, 2015 and is free to the public.

With paint, ink and photography, artists have portrayed views of Rensselaer County’s landscape for over two hundred years. This new exhibit looks beyond the aesthetic quality of these works to highlight these depictions as documents of the ever-changing landscape of Rensselaer County.

The exhibit features over 50 paintings, photographs and prints from RCHS’s permanent collection, including historic paintings by Joseph Hidley and William R. Tyler, historic photographs by James Irving and James F. Cowee, and contemporary photographs by Tom Killips and Brenda Ann Kenneally, as well as a number of works loaned especially for this exhibit. A small annex exhibit called #RCscapes is featuring Instagram pictures of the county submitted by local community members. Special gallery talks and other programs will be presented – check the RCHS website as details become available.

The exhibit is sponsored in part by The Lucille A. Herold Charitable Trust.

Located at 57 Second Street, in Troy NY, RCHS is open Thursdays – Saturdays, Noon to 5pm. There is no fee to view the exhibit, donations are encouraged. Guided tours of the exhibit are available for groups. For more information, call 518-272-7232 or visit www.rchsonline.org
