Historic properties spanning the length of Long Island are regularly threatened by a variety of complex issues that all point to a need for their greater appreciation and protection.
The Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities (SPLIA) launched its inaugural List of Endangered Historic Places in 2010 to broadly educate the public about the region’s wide range of historic environments and provide support and greater visibility to local efforts working to save at-risk resources.
Compiled through a nomination process, the list, which appears every other year, also encourages citizens to participate in defining cultural and historic significance and engage in developing alternatives to the status quo within their communities.
Previous lists, drawn from island-wide submissions, have ranged from agricultural sites, country estates, inns, historic districts, and the addition of a SPLIA-nominated “Watch Site” in 2013. SPLIA is now accepting nominations for the 2015 list, anyone who knows of an important historic property that is threatened is encouraged to download a form by visiting SPLIA’s website: www.splia.org. The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2014.

Is the Cole’s School, located at 27 Cedar Swamp Road, Glen Cove on the list of protected historic, land marked buildings? If not, it is urgent that it obtain this status because Glen Cove has put out a request for Expressions of Interest and I am very concerned that a developer will try to knock it down or try to convert it to an apartment building. Please contact me with your reply as soon as possible and please provide the documentation. My email is grace.slezak@gmail.com. Thank you.
