The Hudson Valley Writing Project at SUNY New Paltz (HVWP) will offer two “place-based” writing programs in Dutchess County in collaboration with the Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Site and the Friends of Clermont.
“Project Write: Writing into History” and “Where Art, History, and Nature Meet!” are one-week writing enrichment programs for students ages 12-16 wishing to explore nature, history, and art. Tom Meyer, Director of the Hudson Valley Writing Project, observed, “Last year, I was jealous of the kids who got to spend a week hiking around, writing and having fun learning about these historic structures and ruins; how great to touch and view artifacts and original letters!” He added, “Teachers and students rarely get a chance to immerse themselves for more than a day at any Hudson Valley historic sites.”
Each of the programs are led by two HVWP teachers working in collaboration with on-site educators. Having extensive experience leading these programs, Eric Fiore a social studies teacher from LaGrange Middle School in the Arlington School District, believes that “everyone has a writer within and that when students write, they have fun expressing themselves and developing an appreciation of learning beyond the classroom walls.”
“Writing into History” will take place July 7-11 and “Where Art, History, and Nature Meet!” will take place July 21- 25. Both programs run from 9:00am-3:00p.m. The tuition is $225 and scholarships are available. Registration and additional information are available online, or by contacting Diane Rawson, HVWP Coordinating Director of Youth Programs: (845) 943-8437
