The Lewis County Historical Society is holding its 3rd annual meeting of historians and others interested in local history and cultural resources this Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Society, 7552 South State Street, Lowville, NY.
All town and village historians, historical societies, museums, and libraries in Lewis County are being invited along with the general public. What follows is the day’s schedule:
10 – 10:15 am – Introductions
10:15 – 10:30 am – John Bartow, Jr., Executive Director of the Tug Hill Commission, will present a brief overview of an upcoming workshop. TAUNY (Traditional Arts in Upstate New York), along with the St. Lawrence County Arts Council and the Tug Hill Commission, are holding meetings to speak to people in the Black River Valley/Tug Hill region to find out what kind of project local people would be interested in seeing TAUNY undertake, and to determine who other partners might be. The meeting is scheduled for May 8th from 2 to 4 pm at the Lewis County Historical Society.
10:30 – 11:30 am – Kent Stuetz, New York State Archives Regional Advisory Officer, Region 5, will give a program entitled “Using Local Government Records for Community and Family History Research”. This presentation will explore the various kinds of local government records that are useful in providing documentation for community and family history research, a common request of local historians. The role of municipal historians and clerks, relative to these resources, will also be explored.
11:30 – 12:30 pm – Amanda Baker, Associate Product Manager of Gaylord Archival & Museum Products, will give a presentation entitled “Understanding Archival Products with Gaylord Bros.” She will focus on archival products commonly used by historians and local governments. The presentation will cover the basics of collections care for paper, photographs, textiles and books. Printed guides on collections care will be available along with samples.
12:30 – 1pm Lunch Break
1:00 pm – Steven Engelhart, Adirondack Architectural Heritage, will give a lecture on “Historic Preservation: What’s It All About?” This program is a general introduction to understanding the importance of preserving our nation’s built environment. Using illustrations from all over the eastern seaboard and from the Adirondack region, it begins by exploring the many reasons that individuals, businesses, non-profit organizations and government are increasingly involved in promoting historic preservation.
