Event: Uncommon Approaches to the Common Core

April 15, 2014 by Editorial Staff Leave a Comment

State Education Building by Matt Wade Photography (Wikimedia User UpstateNYer)The NYS Education Department’s Office of Cultural Education has announced Uncommon Approaches to the Common Core, the second conference bringing together classroom teachers and educators from all types of cultural institutions to support implementation of the Common Core Learning Standards. The conference will take place in Albany on August 12 and 13, 2014.

New York’s cultural institutions include libraries, museums, archives and records repositories, historic sites, performing arts centers, zoos, nature centers, state, national and local parks, and public television and radio stations. Educators from these organizations work with teachers and students to enrich the curriculum and engage student interest. Conference participants will learn about and practice incorporating cultural resources in classroom activities, explore inquiry in every curriculum area, network with colleagues on a regional basis, and jump start collaborations on many levels.

The 2014 conference is focused on inquiry as both a learning strategy and a professional discipline. Barbara Stripling, Assistant Professor of Practice in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University and President of the American Library Association, will deliver the keynote address.

For more information and updates, visit the conference blog at uncommoncc.blogspot.com. Registration should open in 3-4 weeks. Organizers hope to have significant participation from New York’s history community
