The Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society has announced the third program of its 2014 “Odds and Ends” Winter Lecture Series on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 in the Legacy Room at the Lake Placid Convention Center. The lecture will begin at 7 p.m.
This program in the four-part series is titled, “A History of Hockey in Lake Placid” presented by Denny Allen, Butch Martin and Steve Reed. The Historical Society, the Olympic Museum and Northwood School will showcase a display of memorabilia.
Denny Allen played high school hockey and graduated from Lake Placid High School in 1972. He went on play Division I hockey and study at St Lawrence University. Allen’s professional career began as the Administrative Assistant to the Sports Director of the 1980 Olympic Winter Games, responsible for ice sports. He was also the venue manager of the Speed Skating Oval for the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid. Denny has been the Director of Events for the Olympic Regional Development Authority and currently holds the position of Olympic Center Venue Manager. He served as Ice Meister for short track speed skating and figure skating at the Torino, Italy and Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games.
Butch Martin graduated from Lake Placid High School in 1970 then went on to study at the University of New Hampshire. He returned to Lake Placid and coached the Lake Placid High School hockey team to the State Championships in 1980. Martin, in addition to holding the position of North Elba Parks District Manager, is the local supervisor for the NYS Amateur Hockey Association. He was inducted to the NYS High School Hall of Fame in March 2013 for his dedication to the sport as a truly great coach and referee who has contributed noteworthy service to New York State High School hockey.
Steve Reed has taught at Northwood School since 1971 and spends quality time educating hockey players on their post-secondary educational opportunities. Reed won the American Hockey Coaches Association Jim Fullerton Award in 2003 for dedication to the game of hockey.
The winter lecture series has been titled “Odds and Ends” in memory of Laura Viscome, a long- time supporter of the Historical Society. Her weekly “Odds and Ends” column ran in the Lake Placid News for many years and was a great source of information of residents and visitors.
Lectures are offered monthly, January through April, 2014. All programs offered in the Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society’s “Odds and Ends” Winter Lecture Series are free and open to the public. The series will conclude with a presentation by Lex Dashnaw titled “North Country History” to be held at Howard Johnson’s on Wednesday, April 30, 2014.
