The Chapman Historical Museum has opened a new exhibit of fourteen S.R. Stoddard original albumen photos featuring local winter scenes.
Included are views of snow-covered streets in Glens Falls as well as two stereo views of Lake George. Titled “Frost Work,” a term used by Stoddard, the small exhibit features images of the 1870s — a time when winter transportation consisted of sleds and sleighs. Even the horse drawn trolley ran on runners.
In another display in the former Uncorked Glens Falls storefront one will find a series of digital reproductions of the February 14, 1914 storm that dumped 24 inches of snow on Glens Falls. Included are images of massive snow banks that dwarf people and obscure the storefronts behind them. Both exhibits will be on view through March.
These photographs are a small sampling of the 13,000 images in the museum’s archives. To see more examples of Stoddard’s work people may visit the museum to view a virtual exhibit of his photos, or researchers may make arrangements to search the museum’s image database by appointment. The museum is currently undertaking a grant funded project to place the material online by May 2014.
The Chapman Museum is located at 348 Glen Street, Glens Falls. Public hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday from noon to 4 pm.
